Nut Splitter

NorthernTool.com nut splitter set

Nut Splitters
These handy tools can cut a nut off from a bolt.  A small tool is fitted around the nut and using a wrench a blade is forced into the side of the nut usually causing the nut to break. Sometimes it can even do so without destroying the bolt.  This tool is commonly used when the nut head is stripped to the point a wrench is unusable and the bolt is a stud that is not easily replaceable.

Often times when working on a Jeep a stripped nut means that the bolt is rusted so bad the nut and bolt have fused themselves.  Most often it is best to cut off the nut and bolt and use a new one.

Variations

Nut splitters come in several varieties and sizes.  Two common types are like the one shown above and the one shown to the right.  The latter allows access to the nut from the side.  For larger heavy duty applications hydraulic splitters are used.

Recommendation

This tool is not a commonly used tool in the Jeeper's garage.  Often a good locking pliers can hold a stripped nut.  If you are looking to equip your garage with a set of nut splitters use a set of common sized nut splitters.
