Straps and
Bungees
Safety straps come in three
basic types. Ratchet, autolock, and bungees.
Typically they have hooks or eyes at either end and can be
very useful at holding cargo and holding items together.
Lightweight and very strong is the key benefit of these
items.
Ratchet
straps allow for the user to tighten the strap incrementally
and usually tighter than one can pull. This can
perhaps exert the proper force to ensure the object will
stay where it is put.
Autolock
straps have a mechanism that uses small teeth to dig into
the strap when pulled tight. The teeth grip force
increases since the teeth are part of a cam-like assembly
that prevents the strap from pulling out. Usually
these straps do not allow for additional tension other than
one can pull. Autolock straps come apart easily when
the cam release is pushed.
Bungees
are not technically a strap but are similar, more like an
elastic cord with two attachments at each end. Bungees
are useful for wrapping around objects holding objects down.
The elastic nature can sometime cause these to be a poor
choice when holding heavy objects or something that will
collapse under pressure. Use bungees with care as they
can cause injury if they come loose.
Ball
bungees have no hooks and usually are used for holding
things in a round manner. The ball connects a loop of
elastic cord. The cord is wrapped around an object and
passed over the ball. These items are easy to use and
slightly safer than regular bungees.
Recommendation
You can never seem to have
too many of these things. They get lost and wear out.
Keep plenty on hand of all types. Usually they come in
packs with multiple sizes. Keeping a set of heavy duty
ratchet straps on hand will come in helpful when holding
heavy items.
