Types
and Options
Vises
come in a variety of sizes and have
several kinds of head
configurations. Larger vises
obviously have larger holding jaws
and also have a deeper work area.
The work area is the depth from the
top of the jaws to the bottom shank
area where the screw mechanism is.
Some vises allow compound movements
and/or rotate. Often vises are
also equipped with a small anvil
area handy for hammering or driving
objects.
Sizes
Usually measured in inches by the
size of the jaws.
Heads
Most
metal working vises have hardened
steel jaws with a coarse gripping
area for clamping onto steel.
Many vises have plastic or heavy
rubber covers that can prevent
marring or damage to a work piece.
