Hand Tools
Hammer,
Mallet, Sledge
A hammer is one
of the oldest tools used by man. It is a device
designed to deliver a blow in order to deform or move an
object. A hammer is usually a weighted head at the end
of a handle. Hammers are usually designed for specific
pursoses so their design variations are almost limitless.
When working on Jeeps there are only several types that are
commonly used.

Common Types
Claw Hammer - A
claw hammer is typically used in carpentry but can
very useful in automotive work. The claw
section can be used to pry and separate objects and
material.
Ball Peen -
This hammer has one flat striking surface and a
domed surface. The term peening is referred to
when striking a metal object to surface harden.
Not something typically done in a Jeeper's garage
but a ball peen hammer is an excellent tool for
driving punches, bolts, etc...

Mallet - A mallet
typically has a head that is softer than steel and is used
for driving an object without the danger of deforming the
object. Mallet heads are generally made of rubber,
brass, and plastics.
Sledge - A hammer with
a larger head and longer handle made to deliver larger blows
to an object. Sledge hammers can come in varying
lengths and head configurations.
A bit of trivia
- the mallet was often the tool of choice for cartoon
characters when a good blow to the head was needed.
Recommendation

claw hammer, One large and smaller ball peen, heavy rubber
