A
cable hoist is a device used for lifting or lowering
by means of a cable or wire rope wrapped around a
drum. There are manual or powered versions
(shown on the right) of cable hoists available.
Hoists are usually attached to a beam or other load
supporting point with a hook or hoop.
Hoists are handy for
holding / lifting / lowering engines, transmissions,
frames, etc...
Proper attention
should be paid to see that the hoist is weight rated
for the job and that the mounting point is capable
of supporting the load being held.
A "come-along" is
similar to a cable hoist but usually utilizes a hand
operated ratcheting mechanism to prevent the cable
from unwinding. A come-along is handy for
holding down heavy loads and lifting.
|
A come-along is not as capable
at extending it's cable smoothly under a load. The
user needs to unload the safety catch and move the lever to
release cable. The extending of the cable can only
move at the lengths of the lever. After a complete
lever arc is reached the catch must be reset and the lever
moved back to the start.
Recommendation
A good quality come-along will
come in handy in any garage. One large (1 ton) and one
small (1/2 ton) will cover most needs. Small weight
ratings will reduce the overall size of the tool, which may
be good in some situations. Follow proper safety
procedures when using.
