A level 2 charger for your Wrangler 4xe will drastically reduce the charge time and can be more energy efficient. There are several makers of level 2 chargers and most are excellent choices. If you didn’t know the charger is actually in the Jeep and these charger units are kinda just a smart extension cord with a J1772 plug. The Wrangler 4xe can’t use higher input than the 32 amp charger can offer so spending the extra money on higher amperage units isn’t going to gain you anything.
To note, the Jeep branded charger available from Mopar is a JuiceBox 32 with a Jeep logo on it made by Enel X. On occasion the Jeep branded one can cost less than the JuiceBox. Checking both when shopping can often find the best deal. In our case the JuiceBox branded one was cheaper due to a promotion and had free shipping.
In the end many Wrangler 4xe owners use the level 1 charger that comes with the Jeep with no issues. A full charge can take 12 to 14 hours and that may not be a problem. If you can take advantage of off peak electric rates you can save some money by charging during those times, this is where a level 2 can have a direct savings advantage.
This article is going to assume you already have a proper plug and circuit installed for your charger. The 32 amp JuiceBox only needs a 240V 40 amp circuit. Since we are planning to have a 2nd all electric car we had a 100 amp sub-panel installed with a 40 amp breaker to feed the JuiceBox through a NEMA 14-50 outlet.
Installation
The JuiceBox 32 is rather simple, the station and a mount. It is weatherproof and can be mounted outdoors. After finding a suitable mounting location mount the mounting bracket and slide the JuiceBox into place. There is a lock on most models to prevent the unit from being removed, this is especially helpful out doors. Plug in the unit and download the app to your smart phone.
We had a 100 amp sub panel installed in our garage and gave the charger its own 40A breaker. A convenience outlet was a nice addition.
