BF Goodrich All Terrain Tires for the 4xe

The 33″ BF Goodrich All Terrain tires that come with a Rubicon are real nice but they are conservative and just feel small and skinny. We’ve decided to not go big or aggressive with the 4xe and the 35″ size of the same tire is large enough and wider to give the Jeep a proper look.

Size and Weight Rating

In some ways we are fortunate that Jeep offers the Extreme Recon package (aka XR) on several models of the JL. This package comes with 35″ BF Goodrich All Terrains but they have a lighter weight rating then the standard 35. To avoid to much detail most factory tires on a Jeep are C rated, D and E rated tires are common when going to larger sizes. These higher ratings are designed for heavier vehicles resulting in a heavier and stiffer tire which leads to a worse ride and driving feel.

Since BFG offers the C rated All Terrain the Jeep will keep the better ride even though the tire size is increased. We like that.

The tire specs are…

BF Goodrich All Terrain model 08884
Size – 315/75R17 C rated
Diameter – 34.4″
Weight – 63.4lb

These tires are a smidge smaller and narrower than the 35×12.5×17, the slightly less wide spec allows them to fit better on the factory Jeep Rubicon wheel.

Will it Fit?

Interestingly the 4xe Rubicon sits about 1″ higher than a standard Rubicon due to heavier springs to deal with the weight of the 4xe battery, plus, the Rubicon features the wide-trak axles. All of this will allow the 35″ tires to fit on the Jeep with no lift and no wheel spacers.

We picked up a set of the tires from 3S and had them mounted to the factory wheels. The Jeep’s speedometer was calibrated for the new tire size. This keeps the shift points in the proper place and also corrects the speedometer that would read slower than actual speeds.

The tires fit nice with no lift and the wider axles on the Rubicon allow them to fit the factory wheels with no spacers.

Since the tires are essentially the same the ride is still quiet and smooth – no clumsy heavy tire feel.

Mileage Difference?

After a week or so driving the exact same route as usual there doesn’t seem to be any difference in electric miles or driving feel. The percentage gain in side is about 6% which isn’t a whole lot. We are very pleased.
