Fresh off the installation of a BDS 3″ lift it seemed time to upgrade the jeepfan.com JK’s tires. Now we have been very happy with the Toyo tires and the factory Moab Rubicon wheels but a change would give us a different perspective of how different tires would work.We chose the new BF Goodrich Mud Terrain KM2 tires mounted to a set of AEV 17″ silver pintler wheels.
BFG has been a leader in off road tires for years and the new Mud Terrain design is a fresh new look for a tried and true tire. A complete redesign based upon the Krawler tire but friendlier to the task of everyday street travel. For more detail see the BFG Mud Terrain Review and Information article.
Why AEV wheels?
AEV specializes in products made specifically for Jeep vehicles. The new 17″ pintler wheel is designed specifically for the JK’s 5 on 5″ bolt pattern. The pintler wheel is 8.5″ wide and adds 1″ less backspacing than the factory wheels to allow larger, wider tires to fit without rubbing the front and rear suspension components. For more detail see the AEV Pintler 17″ Wheel Review and Information article.
We ordered a set of the BFG Mud Terrains in 35X17X12.50 size and had the guys at OK Auto mount them to the new AEV wheels. Sitting on the shop floor they looked impressive but once we got them on the Jeep it was like “Holy SH*$” those are staying on. Personally I love the factory Moab wheels but the AEV wheels and the white letters on the BFG’s just make the look of the Jeep pop. The slight increase in width due to the 1″ reduction in backspace make the Jeep look stout and mean.
Review
The tires are surprisingly quiet and smooth compared to other mud tires. They track straight down the road and thanks to the 17″ wheels maneuvering is crisp (as crisp as a lifted Jeep can be) The looks of the tire are awesome. A modern design with years of research and engineering to make a formidable tire. Check back in a few weeks for the review of these tires used off road.
