Transmission Identification – CJ-5

Question: My brother-in-law has a 1970-1980 cj5 jeep. It has a 304 with a 4 speed transmission. It got stuck in 3rd gear and then in 4th. We took the shifter off and a pin that connects to the shift lever is missing. We can\’t find out what transmission it has. The #s on the top are of the transmission are c-2604208 The #s on the passenger side are pgdf18 0789 5359389 any help would be appreciated Thank you, Josh

Answer: Josh, It’s possible that the Jeep could have one of two different transmissions. Most likely it’s a T-18 but the 1980 CJ had a T-176. The easy way to tell is the T-176 had a straight shifter lever while the T-18’s is bent.

See the Transmission Guide in the Jeep tech section.
