Replacing a Quadratrac

QUESTION: I just got a 1976 CJ-7 60% restored. It has a auto transmission and a quadratrac transfer case. Can I put a Dana 18 or a Dana 20 to the auto transmission? If not what should I use? It came with a 1982 CJ-7 and a 1982 CJ-8 for parts. Blair

ANSWER: The Dana 18 will not bolt directly in place of a quadratrac nor will the Dana 300’s from the 82’s that you have. Your best option if you want to keep the automatic is to replace the Quadratrac with a Dana 20.
