POR-15 Rust
Preventative Coating Review
Every person
that has ever worked on an older Jeep knows one
thing...Jeeps rust. This is especially true for those
living in areas that experience winter time and the salty
roads that come with it. We recently completed a
frame replacement on a CJ-5
and we wanted to take steps to prevent the replacement frame
from suffering the same fate as the original.
CJ Frames
Background
77-86 CJ frames are boxed front to back. It is
basically 2 C channel pieces of steel welded together.
Mud, salt, and other contaminates lay inside the frame rails
and the frame rots from the inside. The answer to
combat this problem - POR-15 Rust Preventative Coating.
About POR-15
From the POR-15
website
"POR-15®
is a high-tech, high performance rust-preventive coating
designed for application directly on rusted or seasoned
metal surfaces. It dries to an incredible rock-hard,
non-porous finish that won't chip, crack, or peel, and it
prevents rust from recurring by protecting metal from
further exposure to moisture."
POR-15 produces several other
rust preventative products, see their
site for
more info.
Preparation and Application
All frame work (welding, drilling, fabrication) was
completed and the frame was cleaned of all loose rust and
degreased thoroughly. After a good drying POR-15 Metal
Ready was applied to un-rusted metal to etch the surface to
allow the coating to adhere.
The POR-15 coating was applied
on the inside of the frame rails first. This can be
tricky and almost impossible to insure complete coverage.
We did our best by mixing the POR-15 in a spray gun and
rigging up a small flexible tube to help aim the spray
around the inside of the frame rails. The coating was
then applied to the outer surfaces of the frame rails using
a brush. The coating dries rather quickly and melts
together leaving a glossy finish with no brush marks.
Forget brush cleaning - use a new one.
Safety
Be sure to wear protection on your hands and eyes when
applying the coating. This stuff on your skin takes
weeks to wear off.
Results
We were left with a
new looking frame with a hard and glossy black finish, ready
for everything to be reassembled. The finish is very
hard and withstood the punishment of parts installation,
tools, and general contact.

A Year Later
The finish has held
up well. No rust through, chips, or problems.
One thing though areas exposed to prolonged sunlight do
develop a milky colored haze. POR-15 does acknowledge
this and advises painting over exposed surfaces to prevent
this haze. The protection to sunlight exposed areas
does not diminish. No damage to the surface has
occurred from flying debris. Another pleasing quality
of the POR-15 is that it is a non-porous coating so cleaning
mud and dirt is extremely effortless.
